BYLINE · SHOPIFY BLOG GUIDES
Author information that readers and search systems can understand.
Byline helps you show who wrote and reviewed an article. Its structured data can describe that attribution in a machine-readable form. That gives search systems clearer information about the people behind your content.
Start with the information readers can see
Use a real contributor name, an accurate role and a useful biography. Link to a public profile that identifies the same person. If you show a reviewer, that person should actually have reviewed the content.
What Byline adds
The primary author card can show a photo, role, biography, topics and links. The optional reviewer appears as a compact credit with a name, role and profile link. These are different treatments; a reviewer is not a second full author card.
Byline can emit Person data for the visible contributors. Its article mode also describes the BlogPosting, with review attribution on a WebPage object. The available information depends on the profile fields you supplied and the fields displayed by the card.
Connect the same person across articles
- Consistent identity: Person identifiers connect attribution across assigned articles.
- Public profile: an Author profile link supplies the person’s identity URL. A general Website link is kept separate.
- Social identities: supported public social links can be included as sameAs when social links are displayed.
- Visible expertise: displayed topics can be described with knowsAbout, alongside the role and bio you provide.
What about authority and E-E-A-T?
Clear bylines, relevant experience and useful profile pages help readers evaluate the person behind a claim. Byline gives you a place to show that evidence. It does not verify qualifications, create expertise or increase an authority score by itself. Google describes E-E-A-T as a way to assess aspects of helpful content, not one specific ranking factor.
Choose one coherent article description
Check whether your theme or another SEO app already outputs article structured data. Byline offers article, people-only and off modes. People-only avoids adding another Byline article object, but does not repair conflicting author information that another theme or app already emits.
- Inspect a public article’s existing structured data.
- Select the Byline mode that fits that setup.
- Check that author names and links match what readers see.
- Validate the resulting page using Google’s Rich Results Test and a schema validator. A syntactically valid result is not a ranking or rich-result guarantee.
Can this help with AI search?
Clear, accessible pages and consistent attribution give search systems more context. Google says its AI search features use the same foundational SEO practices as Search; there is no special AI schema or required AI text file. ChatGPT search also needs access to public pages through its search crawler.
Byline cannot promise citations in AI answers, higher rankings or a particular authority score. Useful original content, trustworthy contributor information, crawlable pages and relevant independent references matter beyond the author card.
Is structured data still there after cancellation?
When paid access ends, Byline’s paid cards and their structured data stop displaying. Published article author names remain. Keep your theme’s article data consistent with the visible page.
